Priest Crisis? ¿Crisis de pastores?

Jesus is “the Good Shepherd, that lays down his life for the sheep. He has the power to lay it down, and power to take it up again”. “He is the stone rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone”. Jesus resurrected, entrusted the Apostle Peter to care for his sheep: “Feed my lambs”. “Tend my sheep”.

Based on his experience with Jesus as a good Shepherd, Peter advises the priests: “So I exhort the presbyters among you, as a fellow presbyter and witness to the sufferings of Christ and one who has a share in the glory to be revealed.  Tend the flock of God in your midst, [overseeing] not by constraint but willingly, as God would have it, not for shameful profit but eagerly. Do not lord it over those assigned to you, but be examples to the flock. And when the chief Shepherd is revealed, you will receive the unfading crown of glory” (1 Peter 5).

In his first Chrism Mass, Pope Francis, warned the priests of the whole world about their mission as pastors in the Church: “To perceive and to sense, even as the Lord sensed the hope-filled anguish of the woman suffering from hemorrhages when she touched the hem of his garment. We need to “go out”, then, in order to experience our own anointing, its power and its redemptive efficacy: to the “outskirts” where there is suffering, bloodshed, blindness that longs for sight, and prisoners in thrall to many evil masters. This I ask you: be shepherds, with the “odor of the sheep”, make it real, as shepherds among your flock, fishers of men.”

Baptism makes every Christian: priest, prophet and king; that is to say that all who are baptized participate in the Good Shepherd Mission of Jesus, be in the family, work, school, Church, or society in general. “Parents have given children their life, they are bound by the most serious obligation to educate their offspring and therefore must be recognized as the primary and principal educators” (Vatican II:  Declaration on Christian Education, 3). We need politicians who will work for the development and progress of our society; teachers in the schools, colleges and universities to help children and young people to discover and cultivate their own talents; we need leaders, pastors that are willing to sacrifice their own lives for the good of others; that they may say about themselves: "I will be the first to set foot on the field, and I will be the last to step off, and I will leave no one behind. Dead or alive, we will all come home together!”

How are you exercising your mission's pastor in your family, and in your parish?

Jesús es “el buen Pastor, que ha dado la vida por sus ovejas. Él tiene poder para dar la vida, y también para volverla a tomar”. “Él es la piedra angular que los constructores han desechado y que ahora es la piedra angular”. Jesús resucitado, encomendó al apóstol Pedro el cuidado de sus ovejas: “Apacienta mis corderos”. “Apacienta mis ovejas”.

A partir de su experiencia con Jesús, como Buen Pastor, Pedro aconseja a los sacerdotes: “A los presbíteros que están entre ustedes los exhorto yo, presbítero como ellos, testigo de los sufrimientos de Cristo y participe de la Gloria que está para manifestarse. Apacienten la grey de Dios que les está encomendada, vigilando, no forzados, sino voluntariamente, según Dios; no por mezquino afán de ganancia, sino de corazón; no tiranizando a los que les ha tocado cuidar, sino siendo modelos de la grey. Y cuando aparezca el Mayoral, recibirán la corona de gloria que no se marchita” (1 Ped 5, 1-40).

En su primera misa Crismal, el Papa Francisco, advirtió a los sacerdotes del mundo entero sobre su misión de pastores en la Iglesia: “Intuir y sentir como sintió el Señor la angustia esperanzada de la hemorroisa cuando tocó el borde de su manto. Hay que salir a experimentar nuestra unción, su poder y su eficacia redentora: en las «periferias» donde hay sufrimiento, hay sangre derramada, ceguera que desea ver, donde hay cautivos de tantos malos patrones. Esto os pido: sed pastores con «olor a oveja», que eso se note–; en vez de ser pastores en medio del propio rebaño, y pescadores de hombres”.

El bautismo hace de cada cristiano: sacerdote, profeta y rey; es decir que todos los bautizados participamos de la misión de Jesús Buen Pastor, sea en la familia, trabajo, escuela, Iglesia, y sociedad en general. “Los padres que han dado la vida a los hijos, están gravemente obligados a la educación de la prole y, por tanto, ellos son los primeros y principales educadores” (Vaticano II: Declaración sobre la Educación Cristiana, 3). Necesitamos políticos que trabajen por el desarrollo y progreso de nuestra sociedad; maestros en las escuelas, colegios y universidades que ayuden a niños y jóvenes a descubrir y cultivar sus propios talentos; necesitamos líderes, pastores que estén dispuestos a sacrificar sus propias vidas por el bien de los demás; que puedan decir de sí mismos:  “yo seré el primero en poner un pie en el campo de batalla, y seré el último en retirarme, no dejaré a  ninguno abandonado ¡vivos o muertos! ¡Regresaremos juntos a casa!”.

Ceguera espiritual-Spiritual Blindness

La ceguera espiritual es la razón fundamental por la cual el pueblo de Israel y las autoridades romanas crucificaron a Jesús: “han obrado por ignorancia”. Por este mismo motivo hoy en día hay personas que no defienden el valor de la vida humana, no cuidan el medio ambiente, padres de familia que no trabajan en serio por la educación cristiana, humana, e intelectual de sus hijos; muchos adultos no cuidan su alimentación. Lo peor de todo: la ceguera espiritual impide que gran número de cristianos no reconozcan en sus vidas el lugar que únicamente corresponde a Dios; que los hijos son más importantes que el dinero y las cosas materiales; que algunos jóvenes no valoren sus vidas.

“Igual que hay hombres que habitan en cavernas y minas, y nunca ven la faz del día, y realizan su trabajo a la luz de una antorcha, hay también multitudes, más aún, enteras naciones de hombres, que aunque han recibido ojos de la naturaleza no pueden usarlos debidamente, porque viven en un pozo espiritual, en una región de tinieblas. Habéis nacido privados de esta bendita luz espiritual, y mientras esa privación continúe no veréis: no podréis ver realmente a Dios. No digo que no seáis capaces de pensar o hablar sobre El. Pero no conseguiréis otra cosa que razonar sobre lo divino” (John H. Newman, Discursos sobre la fe). Necesitamos que Dios abra nuestro entendimiento como lo hizo con los discípulos de Emaús: "Entonces les abrió el entendimiento para comprender las Escrituras". Esto sucedió también con San Pablo, San Agustín, madre Teresa de Calcuta, Dolores Hart, César Chávez.

Los cristianos podemos vivir como ciegos o videntes. Muchos se conforman con llevar una existencia sumergida en la ceguera espiritual, no porque Dios no desee hacerles comprender su presencia, amor y acción, sino porque ellos escogen las tinieblas de las drogas, no tener una familia estable; gastar innecesariamente su dinero, en vez aprender a ahorrarlo e invertirlo. Es increíble el número de personas que viven de los programas de Gobierno, no porque no haya oportunidad de trabajar, estudiar y superarse, sino porque la mayoría de ellos eligen este estilo de vida. Bill Porter y Nick Vujicic, nos enseñan que el ser humano es capaz de hacer lo que quiere, cuando tiene voluntad.

Es maravilloso saber que Dios continúa abriendo el entendimiento en los miembros de nuestra parroquia: niños, niñas, jóvenes que cada domingo asisten con alegría a misa y catecismo; hombres y mujeres que participan en misa y en los diferentes ministerios. Esto está aumentando los ingresos económicos en la parroquia; hace crecer el número de estudiantes en nuestra escuela, y que nuestros maestros trabajen no como empleados, sino como apóstoles de la educación.

¿Necesita usted, como los discípulos de Emaús, que Jesús Resucitado, abra su entendimiento para comprender mejor su vida, su misión en este mundo?

Spiritual blindness is the fundamental reason why the people of Israel and the Roman authorities crucified Jesus: “acted in ignorance”. For this reason, today there are people who do not defend the value of human life, nor care for the environment. There are parents who do not work seriously on the intellectual, human, and Christian education of their children. There are many adults who do not take care of their nutrition. Worst of all: spiritual blindness prevents large numbers of Christians to not recognize the place that only corresponds to God in their lives; that their children are more important than money and material things; that some young people do not value their lives.

“And as there are men who live in caverns and mines, and never see the face of day, and do their work as best they can by torchlight, so there are multitudes, nay, whole races of men, who, though possessed of eyes by nature, cannot use them duly, because they live in the spiritual pit, in the region of darkness. Now, you are born under a privation of this blessed spiritual light; and, while it remains, you will not, cannot, really see God. I do not say you will have no thought at all about God, nor be able to talk about Him. True, but you will not be able to do more than reason about Him” (John H. Newman, Discourses to Mixed Congregations). We need God to open our understanding as He did with the disciples of Emmaus: "Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures". This also happened with Saint Paul, Saint Augustine, Mother Teresa of Calcutta, Dolores Hart, and Cesar Chavez.

As Christians we can live blindly or alert. Many conform to living a life immersed in spiritual blindness, not because God doesn't want to make them understand His presence, love and action, but because they choose the darkness of drugs, to not have a stable family; to unnecessarily spend their money, instead of saving and investing it. It is incredible the amount of people who live off Government programs, not because there is no opportunity to work, to study and to better themselves, but because most of them choose this life style. Bill Porter and Nick Vujicic, teach us that the human being is capable of doing what you want, when you have the will.

It is wonderful to know that God continues to open the understanding of the members in our parish: boys, girls, youth that attend every Sunday mass with joy and catechism; men and women that participate in mass and in the different ministries. This increases the economic income of the parish; it makes the number of students grow in our school, and our teachers work not like employees, but rather like apostles of education. 

Do you need, like the disciples of Emmaus, for the Resurrected Jesus to open your understanding in order to better understand your life and mission in this world?

Committed or involved? ¿Comprometidos o involucrados?

On May 23, Archbishop Oscar Arnulfo Romero, will be beatified in El Salvador; he is the first Salvadorian saint officially declared by the Church. The role of this Archbishop inspired many missionaries from other countries to support the Church in El Salvador, among them were four American missionaries  who gave their lives in that bloody conflict: Dorothy Kazel, Ursuline Religious Sister from the Diocese of Cleveland; Ita Ford and Maura Clarke, Maryknoll congregates; and Jean Donovan, a Cleveland religious collaborator laywoman.

The unconditional faith of these four women is reflected in one of the letters Dorothy Kazel wrote a few days before her death about El Salvador: that it is “writhing in pain ­ a country that daily faces the loss of so many of its people ­ and yet a country that is waiting, hoping, yearning for peace. The steadfast faith and courage our leaders have to continue preaching the Word of the Lord even though it may mean ‘laying down your life’  in the very REAL sense is always a point of admiration and a vivid realization that JESUS is HERE with us. Yes, we have a sense of waiting, hoping, and yearning for complete realization of the Kingdom, and yet we know it will come because we can celebrate Him here right now.”

A Christian life can only be lived in a committed or involved life. Committed Christians are those who are willing to give their lives for a cause they believe in. Involved Christians are those who contemplate the reality that surrounds them but do nothing to transform it: the silent murder of unborn children, the sale of drugs in schools; display of pornography in the media that poison children, youth and adults. Some Christians believe that everything legal is good, even if it is contrary to the Law of God.

“The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life” (John 12).  After the assassination of Archbishop Romero, some commented that he died for speaking recklessly of the reality his country faced. The religious sisters, their congregations gave them the option to abandon the reality in which they worked, but they, knowing the risk they ran, decided to stay and suffer the fate of the people they served.

Are you a Christian committed or involved?  Do you understand that committed Christians, not those involved, are those who transform a parish?

El 23 de mayo, el Arzobispo Oscar Arnulfo Romero, será beatificado en El Salvador; es el primer santo salvadoreño declarado oficialmente por la Iglesia. La figura de este Arzobispo inspiró a muchos misioneros y misioneras de otros países que decidieron apoyar a la Iglesia en aquél país, entre ellas sobresalen cuatro misioneras norteamericanas que ofrecieron su vida en aquel sangriento conflicto: Dorothy Kazel, Ursulina de la Diócesis de Cleveland; Ita Ford y Maura Clark, de la Congregación de Maryknoll; y Jean Donovan, de Cleveland, laica colaboradora de las religiosas.

La fe incondicional de estas cuatro mujeres se refleja en una de las cartas que escribió, pocos días antes de morir, Dorothy Kazel: “Si miramos a este país pequeño, a El Salvador en su conjunto, descubrimos que es un país retorciéndose con dolor, un país que diariamente se enfrente con la perdida de muchísima gente, pero al mismo tiempo es un país que espera y anhela la paz. La fe inquebrantable y valor que tienen nuestros líderes en seguir proclamando la Palabra de Dios, aunque puede ser que signifique dar su vida por los demás, en el sentido real, es siempre un punto de admiración y comprensión viva que Jesús está aquí con nosotros y nosotras”.

La vida cristiana sólo puede vivirse de manera comprometida o involucrada. Cristianos comprometidos son quienes están dispuestos a dar su vida por una causa de la cual están convencidos. Involucrados están los cristianos que contemplan la realidad que les rodea pero no hacen nada para transformarla: asesinato silencioso de niños no nacidos, venta de droga en las escuelas; exhibición de pornografía en los medios de comunicación que envenena a niños, jóvenes y adultos. Algunos cristianos creen que todo lo legal es bueno, aunque sea contrario a la Ley de Dios.

“Ha llegado la hora de que el Hijo del hombre sea glorificado. Yo les aseguro que si el grano de trigo, sembrado en la tierra, no muere, queda infecundo; pero si muere, producirá mucho fruto. El que se ama a sí mismo, se pierde; el que se aborrece a sí mismo en este mundo, se asegura para la vida eterna” (Jn 12). Después del asesinato del Arzobispo Romero, algunos comentaron que había muerto por hablar imprudentemente de la realidad de su país; a las religiosas, sus congregaciones les ofrecieron la opción de abandonar la realidad en la que trabajaban, pero ellas, aun sabiendo el riesgo que corrían, decidieron quedarse y padecer la suerte del pueblo al que servían.

¿Convicción u obligación? Conviction or Obligation?

22 de octubre de 2012, la Unión Internacional de Ciclismo, anunció que Lance Armstrong, perdía sus siete títulos ganados en el Tour de Francia y que se le prohibía participar en competencias de ciclismo internacional, debido a que la Agencia de Antidopaje de Estados Unidos, aseguraba haber encontrado evidencias abrumadoras de que la exitosa carrera del ciclista, era consecuencia de un sofisticado programa de dopaje.

 

Bernard Madoff, con una carrera brillante en Wall Street. Fue acusado de llevar a cabo el segundo mayor fraude en la historia de los Estados Unidos. Al momento de su detención, Madoff, dijo: “Estoy acabado, no hay nada inocente. He pagado a inversores con dinero que no existía”.

 

 A Jose, por envidia sus hermanos decidieron asesinarlo tirándolo a un pozo, después lo venden a una caravana de comerciantes, quienes a su vez lo vendieron como esclavo en Egipto. En cierta ocasión, la esposa de su dueño, pidió a José hacer algo contrario a la Ley de Dios, a lo cual él se negó rotundamente; la mujer le acusó de abuso, haciendo que lo encarcelaran. Pero Dios le concedió una sabiduría que no poseía ningún hombre en Egipto. Por su obediencia a Dios, José llegó a convertirse en la segunda persona más  importante en aquel reino.

 

“Las “diez palabras”, bien sean formuladas como preceptos negativos, prohibiciones, o bien como mandamientos positivos (como “honra a tu padre y a tu madre”), indican las condiciones de una vida liberada de la esclavitud del pecado. El Decálogo es un camino de vida” (CIC, 2057). La historia de la humanidad nos enseña que nadie puede ser feliz ni realizar su misión a plenitud en este mundo, si vive de manera contraria a la Ley de Dios. Este es el origen del fracaso en el ser humano: juzgar que puede desobedecer a Dios, sin ninguna consecuencia negativa en su vida. Pero la vida comprueba que “el salario del pecado es la muerte”.   

 

Que los niños y jóvenes obedezcan a sus padres y maestros; los ciudadanos respetemos y obedezcamos las leyes justas de nuestro país; las autoridades civiles no promuevan ni aprueben leyes contrarias a la Ley de Dios, no es una idea o capricho de la Iglesia Católica en el mundo, sino la voluntad de Dios que dijo a Moisés: “Yo soy el Señor, tu Dios”. Por eso, “aún con la dolorosa conciencia de las propias fragilidades, hay que seguir adelante sin declararse vencidos, y recordar lo que el Señor dijo a San Pablo: “Te basta mi gracia, porque mi fuerza se realiza en la debilidad” (Papa Francisco, “La Alegría del Evangelio, 85).

 

¿Esta convencido usted que obedecer la Ley de Dios, es una necesidad y no una obligación en nuestra vida?

On October 22, 2012, the International Cycling Union, announced that Lance Armstrong, would lose the seven titles he won in the Tour de France, and prohibited him to participate in international cycling competitions. This occurred when the United States Anti-Doping Agency, claimed it found overwhelming evidence that the successful career of the cyclist was the result of a sophisticated doping program.

 

Bernard Madoff, who had a brilliant career on Wall Street, was accused of carrying out the second biggest fraud in the history of the United States. At the time of his arrest, Madoff, said, "I am finished, there is nothing innocent. I have paid investors with money that didn't exist”.

 

His brothers envied Joseph, and therefore, decided to assassinate him by knocking him down a well.  Then they sold him to a caravan of merchants, who in turn sold him as a slave in Egypt. On one occasion, the wife of his owner asked Joseph do something contrary to the Law of God, which he flatly refused to do. The woman then accused him of abuse, and he was imprisoned. However, God gave Joseph wisdom unlike any man possessed in Egypt. For his obedience to God, Joseph became the second most important person in that kingdom.

 

“Whether formulated as negative commandments, prohibitions, or as positive precepts such as: "Honor your father and mother," the "ten words" point out the conditions of a life freed from the slavery of sin.” (CIC, 2057). The history of mankind teaches us that no one can be happy or carry out their mission in this world if you live in a manner contrary to the Law of God. This is the origin of human failure: to believe that you may disobey God, without any negative consequences in your life. But life proves that "the wages of sin is death".

 

That children and teenagers need to obey their parents and teachers; citizens should respect and obey the laws of our country; civilian authorities not promote or approve laws contrary to the law of God, is not an idea or whim of the Catholic Church in the world, but the will of God who said to Moses: "I am the Lord, your God". For this reason, "even with painful awareness of one’s own frailties, one must proceed without declaring themselves defeated, and remember what the Lord said to Paul, "My grace is sufficient for you because my strength is carried out in my weakness" (Pope Francis, The Joy of the Gospel, 85).

Afraid of change? ¿Miedo al cambio?

On March 24, 1980 at 5:45 pm, while celebrating Holy Mass in a hospital for patients with cancer, Archbishop Oscar Arnulfo Romero was shot and killed. He brought to light the reality of the gospel his country lived in during that historical time. Misunderstood by the Salvadoran Episcopate, reprimanded by Saint John Paul II on one occasion because he was misinformed; threatened to death by the military and the guerrillas; this man fought with courage and truth for the transfiguration of the Salvadoran Church and society. Recently, Pope Francis has declared that Archbishop Oscar Arnulfo Romero is to become a saint. Romero will become a saint not only for El Salvador, but for all Catholics and non-Catholics of the Americas and other parts of the world.

February 28, 2013 Pope Benedict XVI withdrew from the papacy and became Pope Emeritus. This was one of his greatest acts of faith in God; humility, wisdom, and love for the Church. Benedict XVI did not cling to ecclesiastical power, he gave the best of himself to the Church and to humanity, he removed himself and left someone else in his place. Although many in and outside the Church did not understand his decision at that time.

Those who climbed the mountain to be witnesses of the transfiguration of Jesus, they themselves will forever be transfigured. Without this inner transfiguration Gandhi, Mother Teresa of Calcutta, Fulton Sheen, Michael Mc Givney, Dr. Bernard Nathanson, César Chávez, Steve Jobs, Dolores Hart, and many other men and women, would not be like bright stars that challenge us constantly out of the mediocrity that we can sometimes fall into. They understood that: “you must be the change you wish to see in the world” (Gandhi).

The transfiguration of Jesus on Mount Tabor, invites us to transform ourselves internally so that “a tomb psychology thus develops and slowly transforms Christians into mummies in a museum. Disillusioned with reality, with the Church and with themselves, they experience a constant temptation to cling to a faint melancholy, lacking in hope, which seizes the heart like “the most precious of the devil’s potions”. One of the more serious temptations which stifles boldness and zeal is a defeatism which turns us into querulous and disillusioned pessimists, “sourpusses” (Pope Francis, The Joy of the Gospel, 83, 85).

What aspects of your life are you courageously willing to work on, with God's help, during this time of Lent to contribute to the transfiguration of your family and Saint Andrew Parish?

24 de marzo de 1980, 5:45 pm, mientras celebra la santa misa en un hospital para personas con cáncer, es asesinado de un disparo el Arzobispo Oscar Arnulfo Romero. Él había iluminado y denunciado a la luz del evangelio la realidad que vivía su país en aquel momento histórico. Incomprendido por el Episcopado salvadoreño, reprendido en una ocasión por San Juan Pablo II, porque lo habían mal informado; amenazado a muerte por los militares y la guerrilla; sin embargo, éste hombre lucha con valor y verdad por la transfiguración de la Iglesia y sociedad salvadoreña. Recientemente el Papa Francisco ha declarado que el Arzobispo Oscar Arnulfo Romero será elevado a los altares. Romero se convertirá en un santo no sólo para El Salvador, sino para todos los católicos y no católicos del Continente Americano, y otras partes del mundo.

28 de febrero 2013, el Papa Benedicto XVI, se retiró del Papado, convirtiéndose en Papa Emérito. Este fue uno de sus actos más grandes de fe en Dios, humildad, sabiduría, y amor a la Iglesia. Benedicto XVI, no se aferró al poder eclesiástico, dio lo mejor de sí mismo a la Iglesia y a la humanidad, para apartarse y dejar su lugar a otro. Aunque muchos dentro y fuera de la Iglesia no comprendieran su decisión en aquel momento.

Quienes suben a la montaña para ser testigos de la transfiguración de Jesús, ellos mismos son para siempre transfigurados. Sin esta transfiguración interior Gandhi, madre Teresa de Calcuta, Fulton Sheen, Michael Mc Givney, Dr. Bernard Nathanson, César Chávez, Steve Jobs, Dolores Hart, y tantos otros hombres y mujeres, no serían como luceros que nos retan constantemente a salir de la mediocridad en la que a veces podemos caer. Ellos comprendieron esto: “Sé tú mismo el cambio que deseas ver en el mundo” (Gandhi).

La transfiguración de Jesús en el monte Tabor, nos invita a transformarnos interiormente para que “no se desarrolle en nosotros la psicología de la tumba, que poco a poco convierte a los cristianos en momias de museo. Desilusionados con la realidad, con la Iglesia o consigo mismos, viven la constante tentación de apegarse a una tristeza dulzona, sin esperanza, que se apodera del corazón como “el más preciado de los elixires del demonio. Una de las tentaciones  más serias que ahogan el fervor y la audacia es la conciencia de derrota que nos convierte en pesimistas quejosos y desencantados con cara de vinagre” (Papa Francisco, La Alegría del Evangelio, 83,85).

¿Qué aspectos de su vida está dispuesto usted valientemente a trabajar, con la ayuda de Dios, durante esta Cuaresma que Jesús nos ofrece, para contribuir a la transfiguración de su familia y nuestra parroquia San Andrés?

Temptations-Tentaciones

The presence and action of Satan appear in the very origins of creation. They make Adam and Eve fall, Cain kill his brother Abel; regardless of age, the devil puts temptations in life like the shameful situation of Judah (Genesis 38). Temptation is a constant invitation of Satan to think, see, talk, and do what we shouldn’t. Homicides, suicides, robbery, child abuse, drugs, alcohol, pornography, adultery, abuse in the family, are all the fruit of permanent action of the devil in our time. “Evil is masked, disguised, is presented under the appearance of the good: these are temptations that we can fall for” (Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini).

The enemy works in our interior: it invites adults to not give importance to God, to children, adolescents, and young people, to disobey their parents, to not do their homework and not study, lie, do drugs, drink alcohol, to hang out with bad friends. If temptation is accepted sin is the result, and this destroys the person, family, Christian community, and society in general. The consequences of accepting a temption are difficult: Remember the case of Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky? All the money that the Church has paid to victims of sexual abuse? But, “no one when they should be tested, should say: "God is who tests me; because God is neither tested by evil nor does he need to test anybody. But each one is tested, dragged and seduced by his own lustfulness” (St 1, 13-14).

“I must say to myself that I ruined myself, and nobody great or small can be ruined except by his own hand. I took pleasure where it pleased me, and passed on. I forgot every little action of the common day makes or unmakes character, and that therefore what one has done in the secret chamber one has some day to cry aloud on the housetop. I allowed pleasure to dominate me. I ended in horrible disgrace” (Oscar Wilde).

What can we do to resist and overcome temptation? "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will" (Romans 12:2). The power of God dwells within each person, therefore, prayer, fasting, scripture reading, confession, almsgiving, and receiving the Eucharist: rekindles, transforms and strengthens our interior to not be overcome into temptation by the enemy.

Lent is an opportunity to grow, it is “a day of salvation” (2 Corinthians 6:2), so let’s arrange all our lives so that God can do his will in us.

What concrete actions are you willing to perform during this time of Lent, to grow spiritually?

La presencia y acción de Satanás aparece en los orígenes mismos de la creación: hace caer a Adán y Eva, Caín asesina a su hermano Abel; sin importar la edad el diablo pone tentaciones en la vida: el caso vergonzoso de Judá (Gn 38). La tentación es una invitación constante de Satanás a pensar, ver, hablar, y hacer lo que no se debe: Homicidios, suicidios, robos, abusos de menores, droga, alcohol, pornografía, adulterios, maltratos en la familia, son frutos de la acción permanente del diablo en nuestro tiempo. "El mal se enmascara, se disfraza, se presenta bajo la apariencia del bien: esas son las tentaciones en las que podemos caer" (Cardenal Carlo María Martini).

El enemigo trabaja en nuestro interior: invita a los adultos a no dar importancia a Dios, a los niños, adolescentes, y jóvenes, a desobedecer a sus papás, no hacer sus tareas ni estudiar, mentir, hacer droga, alcohol, juntarse con malos amigos. Si se acepta la tentación sucede el pecado, y este destruye a la persona, familia, comunidad cristiana, y la sociedad en general. Las consecuencias de aceptar una tentación son duras: ¿Recuerdan el caso Bill Clinton con Mónica Lewinsky? ¿Todo el dinero que la Iglesia ha pagado a las víctimas de abusos sexuales? Pero, “ninguno cuando sea probado, diga: “Es Dios quien me prueba; porque Dios ni es probado por el mal ni prueba a nadie. Sino que cada uno es probado, arrastrado y seducido por su propia concupiscencia” (St 1, 13-14).

“Debo decir que yo mismo me arruiné, y nadie grande o pequeño puede ser arruinado, excepto por su propia mano. Tomé placer donde me agradó, y paso. Olvidé cada pequeña acción del día común que hace o deshace el carácter, y que por lo tanto, lo que se ha hecho en lo secreto algun día gritara en voz alta desde la azotea. Permití que el placer me dominara. Terminé en terrible desgracia” (Oscar Wilde).

¿Qué hacer para resistir y superar la tentación? "No sigan la corriente del mundo en que vivimos, sino más bien transfórmense a partir de una renovación interior. Así sabrán distinguir cual es la voluntad de Dios, lo que es bueno, lo que le agrada, lo que es perfecto" (Rm 12, 2). El poder de Dios habita en el interior de cada persona, por eso, la oración, ayuno, lectura bíblica, confesión, limosna, y recibir frecuentemente la Eucaristía: aviva, transforma, y fortalece nuestro interior para no ser vencidos por el enemigo en la tentación.

Cuaresma es una oportunidad para crecer, es “un tiempo de salvación” (2 Cor 6,2), dispongamos nuestras vidas para que Dios haga su obra en nosotros.

LOVE-AMOR (february 14th).

I was about four years old when I met an 18 year old girl, she had honey-colored eyes, long black hair, and a smile that seemed to be the awakening of a rose at dawn. She would come almost every day to my parents house and she would carry me in her arms. One day I heard her, Lucia Calderon, say that she would be married soon, and although I did not understand what that was, that phrase just did not seem right. The day after her wedding, she came by the hand of a young man named Alfredo Sorto. Lucia wanted to carry me as she had before, but I did not let her. I felt betrayed and I cried. You will know what to call this feeling in a four-year-old boy. I never saw Lucia again. After some years, I learned she had cancer and had passed away. I hope to meet her once again in heaven.

Human love is the greatest thing God has created in this world: the love of a couple who honestly loves one another and lives according to God's will; the love of a married couple who knows how to live and make sacrifices for the sake of their partner and their children; the love of a mother who goes without food so that her child can eat; the love of those who choose to sacrifice their life for the sake of others, regardless of their relationship to them. This is what Saint Paul teaches us: “I try to please everyone in every way, not seeking my own benefit but that of the many”.

Life without love would make no sense, but love is not what the world offers us. If you want to experience love, if you want to be loved, this is the key: Let yourself be loved by God and love God above all, because He is the only source from which this reality emerges as a pure and inexpressible source of authentic human love. Only someone who truly loves God will know and enjoy to the fullest this mystery. He is able to fill and bring happiness to every human heart that beats in this land: love. We live in a world which is hungry for love. How will you show your loved one how much you love them?

Happy Valentine’s Day.

Yo tenía aproximadamente cuatro años de edad, cuando conocí una muchacha de 18 años, sus ojos eran de color miel, cabello negro y largo, una sonrisa que parecía el despertar de una rosa al amanecer del día. Ella pasaba casi todos los días a la casa de mis padres y me cargaba en sus brazos. Un día escuché decir a Lucia Calderón, que se casaría muy pronto, y aunque yo no entendía lo que eso significaba, esa frase no me gustó. El día después de su boda, Lucía llegó tomada de la mano de un joven llamado Alfredo Sorto, ella quiso cargarme como lo había hecho antes, pero yo no la dejé. Me sentí traicionado y lloré mucho. Usted puede imaginarse lo que es este sentimiento en un niño de cuatro años. Jamás volví a ver a Lucía. Después de algunos años falleció de un cáncer. Espero un día poder verla de nuevo en el cielo.

El amor humano es lo mejor que Dios ha creado en este mundo: el amor de una pareja de esposos que se aman honestamente y viven según la voluntad de Dios, sacrificándose por el bienestar de ambos y de sus hijos; el amor de una madre que prefiere no comer con tal que sus hijos puedan alimentarse; el amor de quienes eligen sacrificar sus vidas por el bien de los demás: su país, la Iglesia, y la comunidad en general. Esto es lo que San Pablo nos enseña: “Procuro dar gusto a todos en todo, sin buscar mi propio interés, sino el de los demás”.

La vida sin amor no tiene sentido, pero el amor no es lo que el mundo nos ofrece. Si usted quiere descubrir el auténtico amor en su vida, si desea ser amado, esta es la clave: déjese amar por Dios y ame a Dios por sobre todo, porque Él es la única fuente de la cual brota esta realidad pura e inextinguible como lo es el amor humano. Solamente Dios es capaz de hacer feliz de manera auténtica a cada corazón humano que late en este mundo. Vivimos en un mundo necesitado de amor. ¿Cómo va a demostrar usted a sus seres queridos lo mucho que los ama?
