GOD-DIOS

The legend goes that one day as Saint Augustine was walking by the beach, contemplating the mystery of the Holy Trinity, he saw a boy who had made a hole in the sand and with a seashell filled the hole with sea water. The child would run to the shore, fill the seashell with water and would run back to fill the hole. Seeing this, Saint Augustine stopped and asked the boy why he did this, to which the little boy responded that he wanted to empty all the ocean water in the hole he made. Hearing his reason, Saint Augustine told the boy that it was impossible, to which the boy answered if he thought this was impossible, it is more impossible trying to decipher the mystery of the Holy Trinity.

“The mystery of the Most Holy Trinity is the central mystery of Christian faith and life. It is the mystery of God in himself. It is therefore the source of all the other mysteries of faith, the light that enlightens them. It is the most fundamental and essential teaching in the ‘hierarchy of the truths of faith’.  The whole history of salvation is identical with the story of the way and the means by which the one true God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, reveals himself to men ‘and reconciles and unites with himself those who turn away from sin’“ (Catechism of the Catholic Church. 234).

“Over the centuries, Israel's faith was able to manifest and deepen realization of the riches contained in the revelation of the divine name. God is unique; there are no other gods besides him. He transcends the world and history. He made heaven and earth: ‘They will perish, but you endure; they will all wear out like a garment....but you are the same, and your years have no end.’ In God ‘there is no variation or shadow due to change.’ God is ‘HE WHO IS’, from everlasting to everlasting, and as such remains ever faithful to himself and to his promises” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 212).

The main problem of humanity in relation to God, is not a lack of faith in His existence, but in accepting His will for our lives reflected in His commandments: "You must keep his statutes and commandments that I enjoin on you today, that you and your children after you may prosper, and that you may have long life on the land which the LORD, your God, is giving you forever." In 1831, Alexis Tocqueville, came to United States to study the secrets of the trade of this nation. He was surprised to discover that the Bible was the basic tool of moral principles in public education, and that biblical teachings were the foundation of the social structure.

There are people in our society that have worked and will continue to work to remove all trace of God in social and private lives. It is a quest to eliminate God as God, so that the human beings don’t have to answer to a higher authority regarding their actions, rather only to themselves.

Remember what John Adams said “Our Constitution was made only for moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other“. What are you doing to prevent God’s presence from being eliminated in our society, in your life, and in your family? 

Cuenta la historia que San Agustín paseaba un día por la playa, pensando en el misterio de la Santísima Trinidad, se encontró con un niño que había hecho un hoyo en la arena y con una concha llenaba el agujero con agua de mar. El niño corría hasta la orilla, llenaba la concha con agua y la depositaba en el hoyo. Viendo esto San Agustín, se detuvo y preguntó al niño por qué hacía aquello, a lo que el pequeño le contestó que intentaba vaciar toda el agua del mar en el agujero. Al escucharlo, el santo dijo al niño que eso era imposible, a lo que el niño le respondió que si aquello era imposible de hacer, más imposible aún era el tratar de descifrar el misterio de la Santísima Trinidad.

“El misterio de la Santísima Trinidad es el misterio central de la fe y de la vida cristiana. Es el misterio de Dios en sí mismo. Es, pues, la fuente de todos los otros misterios de la fe; es la luz que los ilumina. Es la enseñanza más fundamental y esencial en la "jerarquía de las verdades de fe". "Toda la historia de la salvación no es otra cosa que la historia del camino y los medios por los cuales el Dios verdadero y único, Padre, Hijo y Espíritu Santo, se revela a los hombres, los aparta del pecado y los reconcilia y une consigo" (Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica, 234).

“En el transcurso de los siglos, la fe de Israel pudo desarrollar y profundizar las riquezas contenidas en la revelación del Nombre divino. Dios es único; fuera de Él no hay dioses. Dios transciende el mundo y la historia. Él es quien ha hecho el cielo y la tierra: "Ellos perecen, más tú quedas, todos ellos como la ropa se desgastan, pero tú siempre el mismo, no tienen fin tus años". En Él "no hay cambios ni sombras de rotaciones". Él es "Él que es", desde siempre y para siempre y por eso permanece siempre fiel a sí mismo y a sus promesas” (Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica, 212).

El problema principal de la humanidad, con relación a Dios, no es falta de fe en su existencia, sino, en  aceptar su voluntad hacia nuestras vidas reflejada en sus mandamientos: “Cumple sus leyes y mandamientos, que yo te prescribo hoy, para que seas feliz tú y tu descendencia, y para que vivas muchos años en la tierra que el Señor, tu Dios, te da para siempre”. En 1831, Alexis Tocqueville, vino a Estados Unidos para estudiar los secretos del progreso de aquella joven nación. Se sorprendió al descubrir que la Biblia era la herramienta básica de los principios morales en la educación pública, y que las enseñanzas bíblicas eran el fundamento de la estructura social.

Existen en nuestra sociedad grupos que han trabajado y continúan con sus esfuerzos para remover toda huella de Dios en la vida pública y privada de las personas. Se trata de eliminar a Dios como Dios, para que el ser humano no tenga ninguna autoridad superior a quien responder sobre sus actos, sino  únicamente así mismo.

John Adams, uno de los fundadores de nuestro país dijo “Nuestra Constitución se hizo por personas morales y religiosas. Es totalmente inadecuado ser gobernados de otra manera“. ¿Qué hace usted para evitar que se elimine la presencia de Dios en nuestra sociedad, en su vida,  y su familia?

With your feet on the ground, staring at the sky-Con los pies en la tierra, con la mirada en el cielo

“Rising from the ground, David washed and anointed himself, and changed his clothes. Then he went to the house of the LORD and worshiped. He returned to his own house and asked for food; they set it before him, and he ate. His servants said to him: ‘What is this you are doing? While the child was living, you fasted and wept and kept vigil; now that the child is dead, you rise and take food.’ He replied: ‘While the child was living, I fasted and wept, thinking, ‘Who knows? The LORD may grant me the child’s life.’ But now he is dead. Why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he will not return to me’” (2 Samuel 12: 20-23).

“So then the Lord Jesus, after he spoke to them, was taken up into heaven and took his seat at the right hand of God” (Mark 16:19). “I am caught between the two. I long to depart this life and be with Christ, [for] that is far better” (Philippians 1:23).  “Martyrdom is a grace of God I don’t think I deserve. But if God accepts the sacrifice of my life, may my blood be the seed of liberty and the sign that hope will soon become reality. May my death, if accepted by God, be for the freedom of my people and as a witness to hope in the future. You can say, if they come to kill me, that I forgive and bless those who do it. Hopefully, they may realize that they will be wasting their time. A bishop will die, but the Church of God which is the people, will never perish” (Archbishop Oscar Arnulfo Romero).

The Ascension of Jesus Christ  is an event that must strengthen our faith in heaven, encourage us to work on our responsibilities, because: “the expectation of a new earth must not weaken but rather stimulate our concern for cultivating this one. For here grows the body of a new human family, a body which even now is able to give some kind of foreshadowing of the new age. Hence, while earthly progress must be carefully distinguished from the growth of Christ's kingdom, to the extent that the former can contribute to the better ordering of human society, it is of vital concern to the Kingdom of God” (Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World,  39).

Today, in many Christians there is a loss of enthusiasm, lack of interest, faith and hope to work towards eternal life with God: “The great danger in today’s world, pervaded as it is by consumerism, is the desolation and anguish born of a complacent yet covetous heart, the feverish pursuit of frivolous pleasures, and a blunted conscience. That is no way to live a dignified and fulfilled life; it is not God’s will for us, nor is it the life in the Spirit which has its source in the heart of the risen Christ” (Pope Francis, The Joy of the Gospel, 2).

What are you doing on this earth to obtain heaven one day?

“David se levantó  del suelo, se lavó, se ungió y se cambió de vestidos. Fue luego a la casa de Yahvé y se postró. Se volvió a su casa, pidió que le trajeran de comer y comió. Sus servidores le dijeron: ¿Qué es lo que haces? Cuando el niño aún vivía ayunabas y llorabas, y ahora que ha muerto te levantas y comes. Respondió: “mientras el niño vivía ayuné y lloré, pues me decía: ¿Quién sabe si Yahvé tendrá compasión de mí y el niño vivirá? Pero ahora que ha muerto, ¿Por qué he de ayunar? ¿Podré hacer que vuelva? Yo iré donde él, pero él no volverá a mi” (2 Sam 12, 20-23).

“El Señor Jesús, después de hablarles, subió al cielo y está sentado a la derecha de Dios” (Mc 16, 19). “Me siento apremiado por ambos extremos. Por un lado, mi deseo es partir y estar con Cristo, lo cual, ciertamente,  es con mucho lo mejor” (Fil 1, 23). “El martirio es una gracia de Dios que no creo merecer. Pero si Dios acepta el sacrificio de mi vida, que mi sangre sea la semilla de libertad y la señal de que la esperanza será pronto una realidad. Mi muerte, si es aceptada por Dios, sea por la liberación de nuestro pueblo y como un testimonio de esperanza en el futuro. Puede usted decir, si llegasen a matarme, que perdono y bendigo a quienes lo hagan. Ojalá, sí, se convenzan que perderán su tiempo. Un obispo morirá, pero la Iglesia de Dios, que es su pueblo, no perecerá jamás” (Arzobispo Oscar Arnulfo Romero).

La Ascensión de Jesucristo es un acontecimiento que debe fortalecer nuestra fe en el cielo, animarnos a trabajar en nuestras propias responsabilidades, porque: “No obstante, la espera de una tierra nueva no debe debilitar, sino más bien avivar la preocupación de cultivar esta tierra, donde crece aquel cuerpo de la nueva familia humana, que puede ofrecer ya un cierto esbozo del siglo nuevo. Por ello, aunque hay que distinguir cuidadosamente el progreso terreno del crecimiento del Reino de Cristo, sin embargo, el primero, en la medida en que puede contribuir a ordenar la sociedad humana, interesa mucho al Reino de Dios” (Constitución Pastoral sobre la Iglesia en el mundo actual, 39).

Pero existe en nuestra época, en muchos cristianos, una pérdida de ilusión, falta de interés, fe y esperanza por trabajar para alcanzar la vida eterna junto a Dios: “El gran riesgo del mundo actual, con su múltiple y abrumadora oferta de consumo, es una tristeza individualista que brota del corazón cómodo y avaro, de la búsqueda enfermiza de placeres superficiales, de la conciencia aislada. Ésa no es la opción de una vida digna y plena, ése no es el deseo de Dios para nosotros, ésa no es la vida en el Espíritu que brota del corazón de Cristo resucitado” (Papa Francisco, la Alegría del Evangelio, 2).

Unity in Diversity-Unidad en la Diversidad

On December 20, 1860, South Carolina seceded from the United States because Abraham Lincoln had been elected President. The Republican Party wanted to end slavery but South Carolina along with other southern states wanted to continue this practice.  Some legislators suggested dividing the country between North and South; in the South slavery was permitted, in the North it was illegal. Abraham Lincoln said the existence of slavery would no longer be accepted. Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Texas followed South Carolina’s decision to secede from the Union.  Delegates from these slave holding states met up in Montgomery, Alabama and agreed to establish a new nation that would become an independent republic called the Confederate States of America.  The separatists approved a new constitution.  Can you imagine what would have happened to our country if the separatists had triumphed in their project? Thanks be to God that unity in diversity prevailed. That is the essence, origin, and strength of North America, and what distinguishes this great nation from any other the world.

Family, social, political or ecclesial divisions or unity originate in the interior of every person, and has existed since the very origins of mankind. You need to only briefly review the Bible to discover, yesterday and today, the presence and effects of the division in the heart: “I belong to Paul, or I belong to Apollos, or I belong to Cephas, or I belong to Christ” (1 Corinthians 1, 12-13).

In a world so divided by economic, political, racial and religious interests, the Church has proclaimed courageously from its origins: “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free person, there is not male and female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3, 28). But “Integration will be facilitated when all parties maintain an open spirit. Integration cannot be forced” (United States Conference of Catholic Bishops: Unity in Diversity).

The Apostle Peter had to learn the importance, need and value for unity in the Church. But this unity does not happen overnight, or by an act of magic, but rather it is the result of personal conversion by every Christian: “In truth, I see that God shows no partiality. Rather, in every nation whoever fears him and acts uprightly is acceptable to him.” “We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools” (Martin Luther King Jr.). As Christians we are “destined to go into the world and bear fruit”. It is our mission to: work to live in unity in our families, society, Church, and parish.

How are you cultivating and strengthening the unity in your family, neighborhood, job, school, and in our parish?

El 20 de diciembre de 1860, Sur Carolina se retiró de los Estados Unidos, esta decisión fue debido a que Abraham Lincoln había sido electo Presidente de este país. El partido Republicano deseaba terminar con la esclavitud, pero Sur Carolina y otros estados querían continuar con esta práctica. Algunos legisladores propusieron dividir el país entre Sur y Norte, en el primero se permitiría la esclavitud, en el segundo sería ilegal. Abraham Lincoln, dijo que no se aceptaría más la existencia de la esclavitud. Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Luisiana y Texas, siguieron a Sur Carolina en su decisión de separarse de la Unión Americana. Estos estados se reunieron en Montgomery, Alabama, y acordaron crear una nueva nación que sería una república independiente, la cual llevaría por nombre Estados Confederados de América. Los separatistas aprobaron una nueva constitución. ¿Se imagina lo que hubiese sucedido en nuestro país, si los divisionista hubieran triunfado con su proyecto? Gracias a Dios prevaleció la unidad en la diversidad, y esa es la esencia, origen y fortaleza de Norte América, y lo que distingue a esta gran nación de cualquier otro pueblo del mundo.

La división o la unidad familiar, social, política, o eclesial, se originan en el interior de cada persona, y existe desde los orígenes mismos de la humanidad, basta revisar brevemente la Biblia para descubrir, ayer y hoy, la presencia y efectos de la división en el corazón: “Yo soy de Pablo, yo soy de Apolo, yo soy de Cefas, yo soy de Cristo” (1 Cor 1,12-13).

En un mundo tan dividido por intereses económicos, políticos, raciales y religiosos, la Iglesia ha proclamado valientemente desde sus orígenes: “Ya no hay judío ni griego; ni esclavo ni libre; ni hombre ni mujer, ya que todos vosotros sois uno en Cristo Jesús” (Gal 3, 28). Pero “la integración, es decir, la unidad, es facilitada cuando todas las partes mantienen un espíritu abierto. La unidad no puede ser forzada” (Declaración de los Obispos Católicos de EE.UU: Unidad en la Diversidad).

El apóstol Pedro tuvo que aprender la importancia, valor y necesidad de la unidad en la misma Iglesia. Pero esta unidad no sucede de la noche a la mañana, o por arte de magia, sino que es fruto de la conversión personal de cada cristiano: “Ahora caigo en la cuenta de que Dios no hace distinción de personas, sino que acepta al que lo teme y practica la justicia, sea de la nación que fuere”. "Debemos aprender a vivir juntos como hermanos o pereceremos juntos como tontos" (Martin Luther King Jr.). Los cristianos hemos sido “destinados para que vayamos por el mundo y demos fruto”. Es nuestra misión: trabajar para vivir en unidad en nuestras familias, sociedad, Iglesia, y parroquia.

Creados para producir frutos-Created to bear fruit

Jesús cuenta la historia de un hombre que al salir de viaje convocó a sus servidores para encomendarles su hacienda: a uno entregó cinco talentos, a otro dos, al último uno; a su regreso el propietario pidió cuentas a cada uno de ellos: felicitó a quienes habían hecho fructificar sus talentos, pero acusó “de siervo malo y perezoso” al que no produjo ningún fruto.

“Amor, alegría, paz, paciencia, afabilidad, bondad, fidelidad, modestia, dominio de si” (Gal 5, 22), son los frutos que Dios espera de cada cristiano y cristiana, y muchísimos seres humanos se esfuerzan por vivir estos valores en el mundo actual; pero existe también un gran número de personas que optan por ser víctimas de la pereza e irresponsabilidad consigo mismo y los demás; hay cristianos que olvidan sus obligaciones como ciudadanos y viven únicamente reclamando sus derechos; algunos deciden no trabajar para que papá Gobierno los mantenga. Estados Unidos es uno de los países con mayor obesidad en el mundo, porque muchas personas no tienen voluntad de cuidar su alimentación y mucho menos de hacer ejercicio. ¿Por qué existen en este país tantas personas viviendo en la calle? Porque en el alma de muchos ciudadanos predomina un espíritu de invalidez. Ahí está la verdadera raíz del problema.

Bill Porter, fue un hombre con parálisis cerebral, muchos le dijeron que él no podía realizar ningún trabajo; pero Bill no se dio por vencido hasta que logró trabajar como vendedor para la compañía Watkins. A pesar de su condición de salud y el rechazo de algunos clientes, jamás se rindió, sino que para vender caminaba de ocho a diez millas diarias. Porter no aceptó ayuda del Gobierno, por el contario, trabajó duro para vivir por sí mismo. Tony Meléndez, nicaragüense, nació sin brazos, aprendió a tocar la guitarra con sus pies, es compositor y cantante. Teresa Perales, permaneciendo en una silla de ruedas, se ha convertido en una de las nadadoras más famosas de España, y antes, según ella misma comenta, nadaba únicamente como perro.

“Acércate a la hormiga, perezoso, observa su conducta y aprende. Aunque no tiene jefe, ni capataz, ni dueño, asegura su alimento en el verano y recoge su comida en tiempo de siega. ¿Hasta cuándo dormirás, perezoso? ¿Cuándo te levantaras de tu sueño? (Prov 6, 6-9). “Al sarmiento que no da fruto en mí, él lo arranca, y al que da fruto lo poda para que dé más fruto” (Jn 15, 2).

¿Qué frutos está produciendo usted que beneficien a su familia, nuestra sociedad, y a la parroquia? ¿O es una de las personas que deciden ser una carga para su propia familia, la sociedad, y la Iglesia? Hemos sido creados para producir frutos.

Jesus tells the story of a man who before he went on a journey called his servants and entrusted his possessions to them: to one he gave five talents; to another, two; to a third, one; on his return the owner requested to settle accounts with each one of them: he congratulated those who had made fruit of their talents, but accused the one who did not produce any fruit of being a “wicked, lazy servant".

“Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control” (Galatians 5, 22), are the fruit that God expects from every Christian, and many human beings strive to live these values in the world today. There exists a great number of people that opt to be victims of laziness and irresponsibility with themselves and with others. There are Christians that forget their obligations as citizens and live only claiming their rights. Some decide not to work so that the government can maintain them. The United States is one of the countries with the highest obesity in the world, because many people do not have the desire to watch their diet and much less to exercise. Why are there so many homeless people in this country? Because the soul of many citizens is dominated by a spirit of invalidity. There lies the true root of the problem.

Bill Porter was a man with cerebral palsy. Many people told him that he would not be able to perform any job, but Bill did not give up until he became a salesman for the Watkins Company. In spite of his health condition and the rejection by some clients, he never gave up, in order to sell he would walk eight to ten miles daily. Porter did not accept aid from the government, on the contrary, he worked hard to provide for himself.  Tony Meléndez, a Nicaraguan, born without arms, learned to play the guitar with his feet, he is a singer and songwriter. Teresa Perales, who remains in a wheelchair, has become one of the most famous swimmers in Spain, and as she herself says, before she only swam like a dog.

“Go to the ant, O sluggard, study her ways and learn wisdom; for tough she has no chief, no commander or ruler, She procures her food in the summer, stores up her provisions in the harvest. How long, O sluggard, will you lie there? When will you rise from your sleep?”  (Proverb 6, 6-9). “He takes away every branch in me that does not bear fruit, and everyone that does he prunes so that it bears more fruit” (John 15, 2).

What fruits are you producing that benefit your family, our society, and our parish? Or are you one who decides to be a burden to their own family, society, and the Church? We were created to bear fruit.
