Absalom instructed his
attendants to kill his brother Amnon. His father King David pardoned him. After
some time Absalom conspired against the King: he prepared an army to chase his
father out of Jerusalem. Absalom invaded the Kings throne and raped the
concubines his father left to care for the palace. Finally, both armies faced
each other and Absalom was killed. The Bible states that when King David heard
of his son’s death, “the king covered his face and cried out in a loud voice,
‘My son Absalom! Absalom! My son, my son!’” (2 Samuel 19, 5).
Recently the governor
of South Carolina called for the removal of the Confederate flag from the
Statehouse grounds; in order to adopt the flag of the United States of America
as the one and only symbol. It’s amazing that, even after so many years, there
is still a separatist spirit in some citizens that inspired such a sad conflict
in the history of this country. The lives of so many men and women that
perished in that battle were not in vain, instead they are the price of unity
and progress of this great North American nation. History hopes that we all
dispose of any meaningless attitude of rebellion, stubbornness and obstinacy in
our families, schools, work, neighborhoods, parishes, and Church in general;
only then can we build a better world.
Rebellion, stubbornness
and obstinacy, is a reality that affects the Church and has done a lot of harm
over the centuries. After the Second Vatican Council, Marcel Lefebvre, a French
Bishop, unwilling to accept the Church’s opening towards the new times and in
open disobedience to the Pope, decided to establish his own religious
congregation. Without the stubbornness and obstinacy of some people, many
tragic events in the history of mankind would not have happened: the
extermination of millions of Jews, World War II, Pearl Harbor, the unsuccessful
revolution in Cuba, suffering of the people of Venezuela. Rebellion,
stubbornness, and obstinacy are obstacles even for God to be able to act in our
lives. Which is why Jesus could not make many miracles happen in his hometown.
Could God, rightly today, describe our Christian life with only three words?
Absalón, hizo asesinar a su hermano Amnón, su padre el rey David lo
perdonó. Después de un tiempo conspiró en contra del rey David, preparó un
ejército para perseguir a su padre haciéndolo huir de Jerusalén. Absalón
invadió el trono de su padre y violó sus concubinas; finalmente, ambos
ejércitos se enfrentaron y Absalón fue asesinado. Cuando el rey David se enteró
de la muerte de su hijo, cuenta la Biblia que lloraba a gritos diciendo: ¡“Hijo
mío, Absalón; hijo mío, hijo mío, Absalón! ¡Quien me diera haber muerto en tu
lugar, Absalón, hijo mío, hijo mío!” (2 Sam 19, 1).
Recientemente la gobernadora de Carolina del Sur, presentó a los
legisladores estatales la propuesto de retirar la bandera confederada del
Capitolio, para adoptar como único símbolo la bandera de los Estados Unidos. Es
increíble que aún después de tantos años permanezca vivo en algunos ciudadanos
el espíritu separatista que inspiró este triste conflicto en la historia de
este país. Las vidas de tantos hombres y mujeres que perecieron en ese evento,
no fueron en vano, sino que son el precio de la unidad y progreso de esta gran
nación de Norte América. La historia espera que todos depongamos cualquier
actitud de rebeldía, testarudez y obstinación sin sentido, en nuestras familias,
escuela, trabajo, vecindario, parroquia, e Iglesia en general; sólo así,
podremos construir juntos un mundo mejor.
Rebeldía, testarudez, y obstinación, es una realidad que afecta a la
Iglesia y ha hecho mucho daño a través de los siglos. Después del Concilio
Vaticano II, Marcel Lefebvre, un obispo francés, no dispuesto a aceptar la
apertura de la Iglesia hacia los nuevos tiempos, en abierta desobediencia al
Papa, decidió fundar su propia congregación religiosa. Sin la testarudez y
obstinación de algunas personas muchos acontecimientos tristes de la historia
de la humanidad no hubieran sucedido: Exterminio de millones de judíos, Segunda
Guerra Mundial, Pearl Harbor, revolución fracasada en Cuba, sufrimiento del
pueblo de Venezuela. La rebeldía, testarudez y obstinación es un obstáculo aún
para que Dios pueda actuar en nuestra vida. Por eso Jesús no pudo hacer muchos
milagros en su ciudad natal.
¿Podría Dios, hoy, con razón, describir nuestra
vida de cristianos con tres palabras?
