“God did not make death, nor does he rejoice in the destruction of
the living” (Wisdom 1:13). If God did not make death, then who
did? “Therefore, just as through one person sin entered the world,
and through sin, death, and thus death came to all, inasmuch as
all sinned” (Romans 5:12). God warned Adam and Eve: “except
the tree of knowledge of good and evil. From that tree you shall
not eat; when you eat from it you shall die” (Genesis 2:17). Evil
and suffering are consequences of not obeying God: “To the
woman he said: I will intensify your toil in childbearing; in pain
you shall bring forth children. To the man he said: … By the sweat
of your brow you shall eat bread, until you return to the ground,
from which you were taken” (Genesis 3:16-19).
The decision to generate life or death is within every human
beings actions: the pregnant mother decides to protect or kill the
child she carries in her womb; parents opt to give their children a
Christian upbringing, or let them become a problem for society. It
is within each person to choose to consume or reject cigarettes,
liquor, drugs, pornography, prostitution, gangs, and drug
trafficking. None of these were created by God. They are
consequences of the bad decisions many men and women in our
society have made. There are so many destruction in the world
today, that there is an urgent need to have Jesus heal us, or
resurrect us, in the case of those who are dead through sin.
“The origin of all disdain for humankind, of all injustice, should
be sought in the internal imbalance of human liberty, which will
always need to be rectified in history. We will not have a new
continent without new and reformed structures, but, above all,
there will be no new continent without new people, who know
how to be truly free and responsible according to the light of the
Gospel” (Conference of Latin American Bishops
Medellín, Colombia, 1,3 ).
On the afternoon of August 9, 1943, a young Austrian farmer
named Franz Jägerstätter, waited calmly in his cell at Berlin’s
Brandenburg Prison for the escort that would take him to the
guillotine nearby. On the table beside him lay a paper that, if he
signed it, would save his life. Steadfastly he refused. At 4:00 pm,
he was led to the scaffold and beheaded”. These are the last words
he wrote as he refused to be part of Hitler's madness: “Many will
perhaps ask themselves why God had to make us live in such a
time as this. But we may not accuse God on this account, nor
should we put the blame on others. There is an old saying: ‘He
who makes his bed must lie on it’. And it is still possible for us,
even today, with God’s help, to lift ourselves out of the mire in
which we are stuck and win eternal happiness – if only we make a
sincere effort and bring all our strength to the task” (Leo
Knowles, Modern Heroes of the Church).
What do you do to fix what many blame God for?
“Dios no hizo la muerte, ni se recrea en la destrucción de los
vivientes” (Sab 1, 13). Si Dios no hizo la muerte, entonces, ¿quién
la hizo? “Por un sólo hombre entró el pecado en el mundo, y por el
pecado la muerte, y así, la muerte alcanzó a todos los hombres, ya
que todos pecaron” (Rm 5,12). Dios advirtió a Adán y Eva: “del
árbol de la ciencia del bien y del mal no comerás, porque el día
que comas de él, morirás sin remedio” (Gn 2,17). El mal y el
sufrimiento son consecuencias de no obedecer a Dios: “A la mujer
le dijo: “tantas haré tus fatigas cuantos sean tus embarazos: con
dolor parirás los hijos. Al hombre le dijo: Con el sudor de tu rostro
comerás el pan, hasta que vuelvas al suelo, pues de él fuiste
tomado” (Gn 3, 16-19).
Es cada ser humano, con sus acciones, quien genera vida o muerte:
la madre embarazada decide proteger o asesinar la criatura que
lleva en su vientre; los padres de familia optan por educar
cristianamente a sus hijos, o permitir que se conviertan en un
problema para la sociedad. Son los ciudadanos quienes eligen
consumir o rechazar el cigarro, licor, droga, pornografía,
prostitución, pandillas, narcotráfico. Porque nada de eso ha sido
creado por Dios, sino que son consecuencias de las malas
decisiones de muchos hombres y mujeres en nuestra sociedad.
Existen tantas hemorragias, destrucción en el mundo actual, que
es urgente acudir a Jesús para que nos sane, o resucite, en el caso
de quienes están muertos por el pecado.
“El origen de todo menosprecio del hombre, de toda injusticia,
debe ser buscado en el desequilibrio interior de la libertad
humana, que necesitará siempre, en la historia, una permanente
labor de rectificación. No habrá un continente nuevo sin hombres
nuevos, que a la luz del Evangelio sepan ser verdaderamente
libres y responsables” (Medellín 1, 3).
En el atardecer del 9 de Agosto del 1943, un agricultor joven
austríaco llamado Franz Jägerstätter, esperó tranquilamente en su
celda en la prisión de Brandenburgo de Berlín, por la escolta que
lo llevaría a la guillotina. En la mesa junto a él había un papel que
si lo firmaba le salvaría la vida. Él se negó rotundamente. A las
4:00pm, fue llevado al cadalso y decapitado. Estas son las últimas
palabras que escribió quien se negó a ser parte de la locura de
Hitler: “Muchos quizá se preguntarán por qué Dios tuvo que
hacernos vivir en un tiempo como este. Pero no podemos acusar a
Dios por esto, tampoco hay que echarle la culpa a otros. Hay un
viejo refrán que dice: ´Quien hace la cama ha de acostarse en ella´.
Y todavía es posible con la ayuda de Dios, incluso hoy en día, de
levantarnos del fango en el que estamos atrapados y ganar la
felicidad eterna - solamente si hacemos un esfuerzo sincero y
ponemos todas nuestras fuerzas en la tarea” (Leo Knowles,
Modern Heroes of the Church).

Dios?
