This Sunday, October 14, the Archbishop Oscar Arnulfo Romero y Galdámez, is canonized by the Church, which means that he is elevated forever to the altars as the saint of the people. This is something that humanly speaking, some years ago, it was considered impossible to happen.

Saint Oscar Arnulfo Romero, lived and exercised his Episcopal ministry in one of the worst periods in the history of El Salvador. This Archbishop became the voice of those who had no voice during that time of great social upheaval, illuminating with the Word of God and the Magisterium of the Church all the situation that Salvadoran society faced. As a prophet he knew how to makes present and contemporary the historical mission of the Church in El Salvador, but that attitude bothered certain sectors of the ruling class, alarmed his brothers in the Episcopate, and even attracted the attention of the Vatican itself. But now, the truth about the life, teachings, and work of Romero have triumphed, pointing not only to Salvadoran Christians, but to the whole Church especially in the American Continent; his sainthood offers an example for the citizens and Christians of this world.

It is incredible that Oscar A. Romero is canonized with one of the popes he most admired: Paul VI, someone who, as a worthy successor of St. Peter, knew how to guide the Church according to the needs of his time.

The saints challenge us all with their exemplary life to be better Christians, whatever our state of life may be. Saint Oscar Romero was a man totally faithful to the Church, to the teachings of the Pope and of the entire Magisterium; he deeply loved his priesthood and the priests, as well as the religious men and women; recognizes, promotes and accompanies the laity in their mission as Christians and citizens in the Church and society. He loved, lived and preached the Word of God passionately, generating hope in those who listened to him.

Saint Oscar Romero is an exemplary man in his life of prayer, frequent confession, deep love for Jesus in the Eucharist; being these the main sources from which he nourish his spiritual, intellectual and human strength, to carry out his mission as a priest, Bishop, Archbishop, and pastor of the People of God. On March 24, 1980, he offered his life while celebrating the sacrifice of our salvation: the Holy Mass.

Jesus in the Gospel of this Sunday tells us: "I assure you: No one who has left home, or brothers or sisters, or father or mother, or children or lands, for me and for the Gospel, will stop receiving, in this life, the hundred and one in houses, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and lands, along with persecutions, and in the other world, eternal life".

Romero was a child, a young man, a normal Christian, but at one point in his life he discovered God's call to be a priest, he never imagined the plans that Our Lord had for him. You do not have to be a priest or religious, unless that is your vocation; but it is very important that as sons and daughters of God, you know how to discover and respond generously to God's call in your own lives. It depends on the response to our own vocation that we carry out God's plan in our life; also, that we contribute to creating a better world.

Do you know what your vocation is; that is, what is the Lord calling you to do in your life? These don’t happen from night to morning, but it requires faith, prayers, discernment, and decision. That is what Romero did.
